The End of the Em Dash — or Just a Pause?

In a twist of digital irony, one of the internet’s most stylish punctuation marks—the em dash (—)—has quietly fallen out of favor with ChatGPT. Once the go-to symbol for dramatic pauses, poetic beats, and polished prose, the em dash has been ghosted by the very AI that helped it thrive.

Writers across LinkedIn and X started noticing: their prompts—once punctuated by flair—were returning with commas, semicolons, or plain periods. No more em dashes. Clean, efficient, but… missing something.

Was it a bug? A stylistic shift? A UX choice? OpenAI hasn’t said much, but the writerly internet is mourning. Because the em dash wasn’t just punctuation—it was personality.

If language is culture, and punctuation is tone, then the em dash was our eye-roll, our dramatic exit, our slow clap.

What’s next? The rise of colons? The revenge of the parentheses?

Only time (and updates) will tell.
